This “Farmer’s Guide” is meant to be a practical and historic reference for farmers, researchers, and others interested in producing the ancient grain “Proso” (Russian for “common”) millet—scientifically known as Panicum miliaceum. Of the many millet species historically produced throughout the world for thousands of years, this is the most drought tolerant mass-produced grain. It is also economical to produce. Few commercial pesticides are labeled for production; consequently, organic production is possible using this guide. There are common mistakes made by first time, occasional, and traditional millet farmers. Most mistakes are made at planting and at harvest. The key to getting proso grain into storage is to use simple farming principles and readily available small grain planting, harvest and storage equipment. Basic farm management and marketing skills must be employed to profit from production efforts. Each stage of proso grain and forage production is presented in easy-to-read format.
The few remaining paperback copies of this book are available through the “Order” tab. Due to high shipping rates, orders will be sent to U.S. addresses only. Copies of this book and my other millet research are available free from ResearchGate (PDF) How to Produce Proso Millet: A Farmer's Guide (researchgate.net).
